Chhattisgarh cracks down on graft; properties worth ₹8 cr seized in PC Act case

Raipur
In a significant move against corruption, the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) government has taken its first major action under the Prevention of Corruption Act (PC Act), targeting irregularities in the public distribution system (PDS).

According to official documents, action has been initiated under the Prevention of Corruption Act Order 22/2024, invoking Sections 13(1)(d) and 13(2) of the PC Act, 1988. The case, investigated by the Special Vigilance Court (PC Act) in Raipur, involves former bureaucrat Saumya Chaurasia, who has been charged with acquiring assets disproportionate to her known sources of income.

Investigations revealed that Chaurasia allegedly amassed approximately 45 properties valued at ₹47 crore through criminal conspiracy. Of these, 16 properties were acquired through an anti-corruption probe by Raipur’s Anti-Corruption Department. Several properties were also acquired in the names of associates, including Sourabh Modi and Anurag Chaurasia.

Out of the total, 39 properties worth ₹29 crore were identified as part of departmental action, while 16 properties worth ₹8 crore were directly linked to corruption charges. Evidence regarding violations of the provisions under the Anti-Corruption Act, 1944 was presented before the Special Court on June 16, 2025.

On September 22, 2025, the Special Court in Raipur issued orders for final action against 16 properties worth about ₹8 crore.

Officials described the action as a landmark step, marking the state’s first major crackdown on corruption in governance and administration under the PC Act. The government has indicated that similar measures will follow against other public servants under investigation.
