Bastar social worker, doctor couple from Chhattisgarh win Padma Shri

RAIPUR
The Union government has announced the Padma Awards 2026 on the eve of Republic Day, naming three personalities from Chhattisgarh for the Padma Shri. Budhari Tati, a social worker from Dantewada, and the doctor couple Dr Ramchandra Trayambak Godbole and Sunita Godbole have been selected for the prestigious civilian honour.
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai congratulated the recipients, stating that their selection is a proud moment for the state. He noted that the awardees have brought laurels to Chhattisgarh through their dedication to service and social commitment.
‘Badi Didi’ of Bastar
Budhari Tati, a resident of Hiranar village in Dantewada district, will receive the Padma Shri for her work in women empowerment and tribal welfare. Known locally as ‘Badi Didi’, she has been active in forest areas since 1984, working on de-addiction, literacy drives, and social awareness.
Tati has helped over 500 women become self-reliant and has dedicated her life to the education of tribal girls and the care of the elderly. She has previously been honoured by the state government for her contributions to the region.
Healthcare in remote terrains
Dr Ramchandra Trayambak Godbole and his wife Sunita Godbole have been jointly awarded the Padma Shri for their services in the field of medicine. The Ayurveda practitioners have provided free medical care in the remote tribal pockets of Bastar and Abujhmad for over 37 years.
Operating through the ‘Trust for Health’, the couple provides treatment in villages lacking basic infrastructure such as roads, electricity, and mobile connectivity. They frequently travel on foot to conduct health camps, focusing on health awareness, malnutrition eradication, and primary healthcare.
The recognition of these individuals from the Maoist-affected Bastar region highlights the spirit of service in the state’s remote areas.
