A small Gauthan poultry unit of 400 chicks up scaled to a unit of 12 thousand chicks in just a year

Raipur: A journey of a thousand miles begins with a small step. This statement stands true for the women of Amar Self Help Group of Thanaud. Hesitant initially, but with the encouragement of the government schemes towards animal husbandry, they started a small poultry unit in Gothan with just 400 chicks. On successfully operating this poultry farm, they also set up a hatchery which increased their profit significantly and now they have up scaled their farm which has a total of 12 thousand chicks. The cost of a small chick is Rs 5, when fully grown, the cost shoots up to Rs 30 to 40. The chicks become marketable in 90 days and it is expected that in these three months, an income of Rs 4 lakh will be generated by the women of self help group.
The Self-help group expects to have an income of Rs 16 lakhs in a year. Providing information in this regard, Zila Panchayat CEO Ashwini Devangan said that chief minister Bhupesh Baghel intends to increase livelihood activities in the rural regions of the state. In this regard, on the instructions of Collector Pushpendra Meena, work is being done to promote livelihood-oriented activities in all Gauthans. In the Gauthans where this work is being done successfully, up gradation work is also being done to increase the facilities in Gauthans.. The self help group of Thanaud unit with their constant hard work has displayed great results after the government assistance provided to them. The enterprise of these women has proved its mettle in a short span of time and they have ben provided all possible support from the state government and encouraged to work further.
The results have been positive and the 8 women associated with the group are being able to earn a steady income and the economic profit of this group has increased rapidly. Giving information in this regard, Group President Purnima Dhangar said that “we are all very happy and earning regularly with the help of this unit. At first we started the work hesitantly, doubting whether it will pan out successfully or not. But, with state governments support, proper guidance and a lot of cooperation from the officials of the district administration, we were able to up scale this unit in a short duration. There was continuous technical guidance and today we are able to work in such a big shed”.
Giving information in this regard, Assistant Veterinary Field Officer Mohit Kamle said that women are working very hard in their unit everyday. They are being made aware of the necessary precautions for poultry farming to keep chicks safe and healthy.
Poultry farming is going on in 54 Gauthans – Giving information in this regard, Dr. D.V. Rathia, Deputy Director Veterinary Services informed that poultry farming is being done in 54 Gauthans of the district. The Poultry Unit of Gauthans is being rapidly upgraded. Hatchery units have also been started in Gauthans. With the level of work done in Thanaud, the women of self-help groups have put themselves at par with the big farm units and this is just the beginning in terms of financial empowerment in the rural regions of the state.
