Ambedkar Jayanti Observed in Chhattisgarh Amid Political Sparring

Raipur. The 135th birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Indian Constitution, was commemorated across Chhattisgarh on Monday with solemn tributes and political undertones. Governor Ramesh Bais and Chief Minister Vishnudeo Sai paid their respects at the Raj Bhavan and CM House, respectively.

While the state observed a public holiday, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a statewide campaign to mark the occasion. However, this move drew sharp criticism from the opposition Congress, which accused the BJP of politicizing the legacy of Ambedkar.

BJP’s Campaign and Outreach Plans

The BJP’s campaign includes a series of visits by party leaders to Dalit-dominated areas between April 15 and 25. The aim is to highlight the alleged neglect and disrespect of Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy by the Congress and to promote the BJP’s commitment to Ambedkar’s ideals.

As part of its strategy, the BJP will select 25 representatives from each district to engage with influential Scheduled Caste individuals such as teachers, doctors, lawyers, and community leaders—including those not affiliated with the party. The goal is to broaden the party’s outreach and present itself as a true follower of Ambedkar’s vision.

Tributes from the Governor and CM

Chief Minister Vishnudeo Sai said Dr. Ambedkar’s life was a beacon of struggle, equality, and justice. “The Constitution he gave us is the foundation of India’s democracy. His ideals are timeless and inspirational. We must follow them to build an inclusive and just society,” Sai stated.

Governor Ramesh Bais emphasized Ambedkar’s unwavering fight against social discrimination and his firm belief in the transformative power of education. He urged citizens to go beyond ceremonial celebrations and embrace the values of equality, fraternity, and justice in everyday life.

Congress Slams BJP’s Celebrations

The Congress party, however, was critical of the BJP’s campaign. Party spokesperson Surendra Verma labeled it as “political theatrics” and “sheer hypocrisy.” He claimed that the BJP, rooted in RSS ideology, has historically shown contempt for Dr. Ambedkar, the Constitution, and the Dalit community.

Verma cited an incident from December 12, 1949, alleging that members of the RSS and Hindu Mahasabha had burned Ambedkar’s effigy. He also accused the BJP of stalling the implementation of a bill passed during the Congress regime to restore SC reservation benefits, which had been reduced under former CM Raman Singh.

Verma urged the BJP government to stop its “facade of celebration” and focus on providing genuine rights, respect, and representation to Scheduled Castes.

Government Events Across the State

The Panchayat and Rural Development Department organized various programs at district, block, and gram panchayat levels. The Preamble of the Constitution was read aloud during events, and preparations were made for Panchayati Raj Day on April 24, where MoUs will be signed to strengthen digital governance at the village level.

Under the ongoing “Mor Duaar Sai Sarkar” campaign (April 15–30), awareness drives will be conducted about government schemes, eligibility criteria, and water conservation initiatives.

Legacy and Significance

Ambedkar Jayanti, first celebrated in 1928 in Pune by social reformer Janardan Sadashiv Ranpise, has grown into a global observance among Indian communities. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, born on April 14, 1891, was not only India’s first Law Minister but also a social reformer, economist, and scholar who championed the rights of the marginalized.

This year’s celebrations in Chhattisgarh reflect both a tribute to his legacy and the political contest to claim it.
