On the lines of Wardha, a Sevagram of the 21st century will be established in Nava Raipur

Raipur: In a bid to keep the values, principles, ideals of freedom struggle, and Mahatma Gandhi’s concept of Gram-Swaraj intact in the 75th year of independence, a Sevagram will be established in Nava-Raipur on the lines of Wardha. Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel along with Sachin Rao today inspected the identified site for the Sevagram to be built in Naya Raipur.

During the inspection, the officials said that 76.5 acres of land in Nava-Raipur has been identified for Sevagram. This place is adjacent to Layer One of Naya Raipur. The site also has two canals in an area of about five acres. Sevagram will be set up in the remaining 75 acres of land. Seva Gram will be developed in such a way that there is a glimpse of the traditional rural building style of Chhattisgarh. Locally available construction materials will be used in the construction works.  The roads inside the ashram will also be in line with the rural environment. The entire area will be full of greenery till the Sevagram. The whole atmosphere of the ashram will provide inner peace.

To strengthen the rural economy and to realize the dream of self-reliant-village, the provision will also be made for training of all types of artisans in the Sevagram. The project is being developed on the lines of Sevagram located in Wardha, Maharashtra, which was established in the year 1936 as the residence of Mahatma Gandhi and his consort Kasturba, so that from there they could lead the freedom movement in Central India. This Wardha institution was also the center of reconstruction of rural India according to the dreams of Mahatma Gandhi.  Gandhiji believed that village reform was the only option to permanently improve the conditions of India.

Now in the 21st century, as per the dreams of Mahatma Gandhi, Sevagram is being established in Nava-Raipur to carry forward the work of village reform. This Sevagram will be constructed using natural materials like clay, lime, stone. This project will give the inspiration to remember and learn Gandhi-philosophy. Along with this, the memories of the freedom movement and the national history will also be kept alive.

Centers of Gandhian principles, rural arts, and crafts will be developed in the proposed Sevagram in Raipur, where guidance will be given by visiting subject experts. Along with this, old age homes and schools for the underprivileged will also be established there.  Its objective is to empower the local people by increasing tourism opportunities, promoting the folk arts of Chhattisgarh, giving a second home to the elderly, and creating a world-class system in Chhattisgarh for ideological exchange. The proposed visitors center at Sevagram will be a center for learning, living, and remembering Gandhi’s principles.

Chhattisgarh is known for its distinctive arts and crafts.  In Bastar, Raigarh, and other districts of Chhattisgarh, various artistic objects are made using bell metal, iron, terracotta, stone, cloth, and bamboo. Sevagram will be a place where visitors can learn about local arts and crafts, local cuisine and share their information and experiences. Sevagram will also have an open theater where cultural programs will be organized.
