Raipur. To keep Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of ‘Gram-Swaraj’ alive, on 75 years of India’s independence, the government is establishing a sewa-gram on the lines of Wardha in Nava-Raipur, Chhattisgarh. MP Rahul Gandhi will lay the foundation stone of this sewa-gram in a program organized at Science College Raipur on 3rd February.

The sewa-gram will have arrangements for the training of all types of artisans to strengthen the rural economy and to realize Mahatma Gandhi’s dream of a self-reliant village. This project will give inspiration to remember and learn Gandhi’s philosophy. The sewa-gram will keep the memories of the freedom movement and the national history alive.

The government has set aside 75 acres of land for the service village to be built in Nava-Raipur. A glimpse of the traditional rural building style of Chhattisgarh will be seen in Sevagram. The project will be made using locally available materials. The roads here will also be in line with the rural environment. The entire area will be peaceful and green.

The sewa-gram will have a center of Gandhian principles, rural arts and crafts will also be developed here, and visiting subject experts will provide guidance. Along with promoting the folk arts of Chhattisgarh, old age homes and schools for the underprivileged will also be established.

The sewa-gram will also showcase the special arts and crafts of Chhattisgarh. Art works from Bastar, Raigarh and other districts will decorate the premise with bell metal, iron, terracotta, stone, cloth and bamboo. In fact, Sevagram will be a place where visitors can learn about local arts and crafts, and cuisine. It will also have an open theatre, for cultural programs to boost tourism opportunities.

The project is based on Sewa-gram located in Wardha, Maharashtra, established in 1936 as the residence of Mahatma Gandhi and his wife Kasturba, so that from there they could lead the freedom movement in Central India. The Wardha institution was also the center of reconstruction of rural India according to the dreams of Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhiji believed that village reform was the only option to permanently improve the conditions of India.

According to the intention of the Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, it has been conceptualized to make Gandhi Sewa-gram in Naya Raipur on the lines of Wardha to take Gandhian principles and rules to the people in Chhattisgarh. He believes that by connecting the new generation with Gandhian ideology, the energy of the youth can be used in a positive direction. This center will become a medium to acquaint the young generation with Gandhi’s philosophy. They will take on collective activities and work, so that they may participate in society and country building and employment-oriented education.

Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel also believes Gandhiji’s concept of ‘Gram Swaraj’ is linked with economic freedom. For this, youth must connect with employment oriented activities. He plans to connect the members of Rajiv Gandhi Yuva Mitan Club started in Chhattisgarh with Gandhi Sewa-gram.
