CM Bhupesh Baghel writes letter to the Prime Minister requesting to ensure timely supply of gunny bags to Chhattisgarh for paddy procurement

Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel has written a letter to Prime Minister
Narendra Modi, requesting to ensure timely supply of new jute gunny bags as per
the plan issued by Food Ministry, Government of India on November 12.

Baghel
has stated in the letter that as per the aforementioned plan, Chhattisgarh has permission to purchase 2.14 lakh bales of new jute bags through Jute
Commissioner Kolkata. However, the state has received only 86,856 bales of new
jute gunny bags so far, which is much less than the quantity required as per
the plan. Chhattisgarh requires 5.25 lakh bales of gunny bags for paddy
procurement. According to the Jute Commissioner’s plan, a delay in the supply of 100
percent of the required gunny bags can create a law and order situation in the
state.

Baghel
further stated in the letter that indents have been issued by Chhattisgarh
State Co-operative Society Marketing Federation Headquarters; Nava Raipur to
purchase 2.14 lakh bales of jute gunny bags, but the state has so far received
only 86,856 bales of new jute gunny bags, which is far less than the quantity
expected. Chhattisgarh Government is making continuous efforts to ensure 100%
supply of the required new jute gunny through the Jute Commissioner. But
despite the best efforts at the state level, there has been no satisfactory progress
in the supply of gunny bags.

Baghel
has told the Prime Minister that last year, the state had an average daily
requirement of 10 thousand bales of gunny bags for the procurement of paddy at the minimum support price. Considering the requirement of the previous year, it is
important that 100% of the required gunny bags are delivered to that state
soon, as per the action plan of Jute Commissioner Kolkata, as the delay may
cause a law and order situation during the paddy procurement season in the state.

He
has mentioned in the letter that the Food Department, Government of India has given
permission to take 61.65 lakh tons of rice under the central pool in the Kharif
marketing year 2021-22. In addition to the requirement of 16 lakh tons for the central pool, the remaining 45.65 lakh tons of rice is to be deposited in the
central pool under the Food Corporation of India, which also requires a continuous
supply of new jute bags as per the plan. 

In
view of the aforementioned circumstances, Chief Minister has requested Prime
Minister Give instructions to Jute Commissioner Kolkata and Food Department,
Government of India, to ensure timely supply of new jute gunny bags as per the
plan issued on November 12 this year.
