Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot urges swift allocation of land for coal mining in letter to Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel

Raipur Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has penned a letter to his Chhattisgarh counterpart Bhupesh Baghel, calling for the expedited allocation of land for coal mining in the Parsa coal block. This correspondence sheds light on the crucial role of Chhattisgarh’s Parsa East Kente Basan (PEKB) coal mine in Rajasthan’s energy landscape and overall development. In his communication, Chief Minister Gehlot emphasized the significance of swiftly allocating the remaining 91.21 hectares of land for coal extraction. This allocation is essential to address the potential electricity crisis looming over Rajasthan due to the shortage of coal. Gehlot urged Chief Minister Baghel to issue the allocation order promptly to avert this impending crisis. \Chhattisgarh’s PEKB Coal Mine: A Vital Resource for Rajasthan’s Energy Needs The Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited relies on the PEKB coal mine in Surguja, Chhattisgarh, to meet its energy demands. This coal mine not only plays a crucial role in the energy sector but also contributes significantly to the region’s development. However, the delayed allocation of additional land for mining operations and operational inefficiencies have raised concerns about an impending electricity crisis in Rajasthan. \A Plea for Timely Resolution Despite Chief Minister Gehlot’s previous correspondence to Chhattisgarh’s administrative authorities, a solution to the land allocation issue has yet to be found. The situation underscores the urgency of addressing the land allocation matter promptly to ensure the uninterrupted supply of coal and avert potential energy shortages. \Support from Local Communities Villages in the vicinity of the PEKB coal mine, including Ghatabarra, Parsa, Salhi, Janardanpur, and Fatehpur, have shown their support for the mining operations. Local leaders and representatives from around ten villages have submitted memorandums advocating for the continued operation of the mine, citing its positive impact on the local economy and development. \Safeguarding Livelihoods and Development Chief Minister Gehlot stressed the importance of addressing the needs of local communities heavily dependent on the coal mining operations. The Parsa East and Kanta Basan coal mine has been operational for a decade and has significantly contributed to the livelihoods of local families. The mine has halted the migration of youth from the area by providing employment opportunities. Thousands of individuals are directly and indirectly employed due to the mining operations, and plans to establish a 100-bed hospital and English-medium central schools underscore its role in comprehensive development. \Challenges and the Way Forward The unavailability of new land has prompted the company to recall large machinery from the PEKB mine, raising concerns about potential mine closure. Chief Minister Gehlot’s plea for the swift allocation of the remaining land seeks to avert this scenario and ensure the continued supply of coal to meet Rajasthan’s energy needs.
