Dantewada’s desi ‘Dannex’ brand all set to go global

Raipur: ‘Dannex’—the homegrown clothing brand of Chhattisgarh’s tribal dominated Dantewada district—is all set to hit the international market. An MoU has been inked between Dannex FPO and Export House Tirupur—one of the largest wholesale unit in the country—for export of apparels made in Chhindnar, the fifth unit of Dannex. Now, apparels of this ‘desi’ brand will also be seen in the markets of US and UK.

Meanwhile, in a bid to make women self-reliant and provide them with employment opportunities, Nava Dantewada Garment Factory was established in Haram Gram Panchayat falling under Chhattisgarh’s worst Maoist-hit Dantewada district. Tribal women are engaged in tailoring work manufacturing clothes under the brand name ‘Dannex’ which is an abbreviation for ‘Dantewada Next’.

Started about 16 months ago with the help of district administration, this homegrown brand depicts rich tribal culture and tradition of the district. After the success of this first cloth factory in Haram, similar units have been established in Barsoor, Karli and Katekalyan villages.

A batch of about 6 lakh 85 thousand apparels worth Rs 50 crore have been sent to Bangalore in the last 16 months from these four units of Dannex which are being sold across the country from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. About 800 tribals, mostly women from Dantewada district, have got employment through this initiative. Women who once spent days in the shadow of poverty are earning more than Rs 7000 per month today.

Meanwhile, as a part of his meet and greet programme (Bhent-Mulaqat Abhiyan), Chief minister Bhupesh Baghel visited Katekalyan unit of Dannex today. He also interacted with the women working here. The women working said with all smiles that they are happy with their earnings here and are progressing towards achieving financial independence.

Chhattisgarh is setting an example for other states of the country in terms of its steps taken towards poverty alleviation and economic empowerment. Due to the efforts of the state government, Naxalism has been confined to only a few pockets in Chhattisgarh and people here are paving the way for development.
