newborns. 17 out of the 100 children admitted to the SNCU in the state are
dying. A large number of babies are born very weak from birth. The situation is
even worse in Raipur, Jagdalpur and Ambikapur.

36 out of 100 in
Raipur, 32 in Jagdalpur and 28 in Ambikapur die in SNCU. There are 13 such
units operating across the state. The pressure on them is so high that last
year only 22,000 babies were admitted here. In most places, 3 to 4 children are
being treated in one SNCU bed. The hospital management is demanding expansion
in this facility.

Health minister TS
Singh Deo said that every year more than 6 lakh children are born in the state.
Among them, the cases of premature delivery are very high. Last year 22,000 children
had to be admitted to the SNCU. In such circumstances, 400 to 500 children are
dying annually. He said that five children died on 16th in Ambikapur’s SNCU. If
this continues, this figure will reach 1800 deaths annually, which is alarming and
has to be stopped at any cost. The minister has asked the department to take
all necessary steps.

According to experts,
premature babies are vulnerable. There is a risk of many types of infection. In
such a situation, his life expectancy is less. In SNCU such children are kept
on controlled temperature, controlled oxygen. They are monitored by many
devices. Medicines are given to increase their life expectancy. In many cases
the recovery is not as expected by the doctors.

The minister said that
the review has shown that 55 to 60 per cent of the children being admitted to
the SNCU are not born in that hospital. That is, the delivery took place in
another hospital. When the child’s health deteriorated there, treatment was
done at the local level. When the child became serious, he was referred and
admitted to the SNCU. In such a situation also the chances of death increase.

He added that the
deficiency of hemoglobin and iron in women is also a big issue. It is necessary
to pay attention to the amount of hemoglobin and iron in women not only in
pregnancy, but also before that so that such a situation does not arise.

He said that regular
health check-up of all women across the state is very important. For this,
directions have been given to launch a campaign. The goal is big, the challenge
is also there, but it cannot be avoided.
