Arup Kumar Goswami takes oath as 14th Chief Justice of Chhattisgarh HC

The Chief Justice of Chhattisgarh High Court, Arup Kumar Goswami, was
administered oath of office by Governor Anusuiya Uikey at Raj Bhawan, Raipur,
on Tuesday. Goswami took oath as the 14th Chief Justice of
Chhattisgarh High Court.
Chhattisgarh
Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Dr Raman
Singh were present during the occasion.
The new Chief Justice was handed over a warrant of appointment by the Governor.
The warrant of appointment was issued by President Ram Nath Kovind.
Former
Chief Justice P R Ramachandra Menon, who had assumed the office of Chief
Justice of Chhattisgarh High Court on May 6, 2019, superannuated on May 31, 2021
and since then the post of the Chief Justice of Chhattisgarh High Court was
vacant. Justice Arup Kumar Goswami was
born March 11, 1961. In January 2021, Justice Goswami had assumed office as
Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court. Before that, he served as chief
justice of Sikkim High Court.
He
graduated in Economics (Hons.) from Cotton College under Guwahati University in
1981 and obtained LL.B. Degree from Government Law College, Guwahati in 1985.
He was enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland,
Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh on August 16, 1985.
He practiced mainly on the Civil, Criminal, Constitutional and Service matters.
Goswami was designated as Senior Advocate by the Gawahati High Court on December
21, 2004.
He
was Standing Counsel of the Guwahati High Court, Karbi-Anglong Autonomous
Council and North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council. He had also been a Senior
Standing Counsel, Education Department, Government of Assam. After that Goswami
was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Guwahati High Court on January 24,
2011. and became a permanent Judge on November 7, 2012. He was the Executive Chairman of Nagaland
State Legal Services Authority from April 1, 2011 to August 12, 2013.
He
was the Executive Chairman of Assam State Legal Services Authority from June 6,
2018, to October 14, 2019, and the Executive Chairman of Arunachal Pradesh State
Legal Services Authority from March 8, 2016, to October 14, 2019. He was Chief
Justice (Acting) of the Guwahati High Court from September 6, 2018, to October
29, 2018, and also from May 24, 2019, to October 10, 2019. He was the Secretary General of the Guwhati High
Court Bar Association for the period 2000-2001. On 15 October 2019, Justice
Arup Kumar Goswami had sworn in as the new Chief Justice of the High Court of
Sikkim. After the retirement of Justice Vijay Kumar Bist in the month of September,
the post of Chief Justice of High Court of Sikkim had fallen vacant after the
superannuation of Justice Vijai Kumar Bist on 16 September 2019. On 15 October
2019, Justice Arup Goswami had appointed as the Chief justice of Sikkim High
Court. He was transferred as Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court on 31
December 2020 and took oath on 6 January 2021.
