Reported Leak Suggests an Eternals' Appearance in GOTG Holiday Special, Will That be the Case?

A newly reported leak suggests that the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special may feature a cameo appearance from an Eternals character. The GOTGHoliday Special is being simultaneously shot alongside the production of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, with James Gunn helming both the projects, describing the former as his best work ever. The leak comes straight via a bystander’s report who witnessed the sets of the special at the Chinese Theater on Hollywood Boulevard.

Hunter Bolding (via, an editor, writer, and producer for The Hashtag Shaw, saw Christmas decorations and posters of an Eternals’ character among the other set decorations on the sets of GOTG Holiday Special. Bolding noticed that the posters featured Kingo, played by Kumail Nanjiani in Eternals, leading to rumors of his appearance in the movie.

Will Kingo Appear?

It’s Marvel. There is nothing one can concretely say about cameos and references when it comes to crossovers in Marvel Cinematic Universe. And since MCU has grown far from being a place where stories avoided interlinks between them, anyone from any film can appear, fit into, and be incorporated with the other stories within the franchise.

But the nature of the set decorations, as described in Holding’s tweet, suggest that it could just be a reference to the character’s status within the MCU. In Eternals, Kingo, successfully establishes himself as a Bollywood superstar, disguising his decades-long presence in the industry as a family heritage. Being a renowned actor, Kingo is well known to the common people and is likely to have his posters around all over, featuring his characters from his period films and productions. The poster Bolding described could be just a prop that Gunn may use to reference the character and his presence in the same universe, as well as hinting at GOTG Holiday Special’s actual place in the timeline.

At the end of Eternals, after the immortal super-beings halt the Emergence, Kingo, along with Sersi and Phastos are apprehended by Celestial Arishem, who warns them of his impending judgment upon them. This means the character’s fate is now tied to the other two Eternals and is crucial to where Eternals 2 will head. And James Gunn’s GOTG Holiday Special, the penultimate installment in his storylines featuring the group, will dive into a different story altogether. Still, the reference to Kingo will be like a surprise for the audience who are looking for easter eggs in all Marvel movies.

Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will be the second special from Marvel Studios if Werewolf by the Night makes it this year. The story will be a continuation of the Guardians … storyline and from Thor: Love and Thunder and will directly set up Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which will feature Will Poulter’s, Adam Warlock. To be released directly to stream on Disney+, the special would probably introduce new superhero characters and will be of episodic length similar to that of other Marvel Studios’ Disney+ originals.

Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will release sometime in December 2022, during the holiday season.
