The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday arrested a postal department overseer and a sub-divisional inspector for allegedly accepting bribe of Rs 37000. The two officials had demanded the money from an employee in exchange for settling a departmental matter. The case pertains to the Palari Post Office, according to information.
Overseer Rajesh Patel and Sub-Divisional Inspector (SDI) Vinita Manikpuri from the Balodabazar Sub-Division Office inspected the Devsundara Post Office on October 22, 2024. Allegations were made about irregularities in the postmaster’s documents.
Following the inspection, the two officials allegedly intimidated postmaster Nirjala Manhar with the threat of legal action and demanded a bribe to cover up the irregularities. An initial agreement was reached for a payment of Rs 40,000 in instalments. However, Nirjala Manhar reported the matter to the CBI on November 19.
After receiving the complaint, the CBI devised a plan to catch the accused red-handed. On November 23, the CBI instructed Nirjala Manhar to hand over Rs 37,000 in cash as part of the bribe. As soon as the accused accepted the money, the CBI team apprehended them on the spot.
Post-interrogation and recording of statements, the overseer and the SDI were arrested. Searches were conducted at their residences and offices. Following the investigation, the duo will be presented in the CBI court in Raipur today, Sunday.
In another case, Head Constable Ramkrishna Sinha of Smriti Nagar Police Post, Durg, was allegedly caught red-handed by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) while accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 on Saturday. The bribe was seized from the constable. The complaint against him was filed by Shikhar Prajapati, a B-Pharma student residing in the Nehru Nagar area of Durg.
